Radon is a natural, radioactive noble gas produced in the ground. Radon sequestrants, which are produced during the decay of the radonatomas, can enter the lung when they breathe, deposit themselves on the lung tissue, and irradiate it. This can lead to lung cancer.

The more permeable the subsoil, the more radonas can rise up to the surface of the earth. We find high permeability in the finest cavities (pores), in the case of larger cavities (crevices, cracks, shelters, or in crags) and karst areas or cave systems. The radon hardly penetrates through dense layers of clay.

Local differences are therefore very pronounced. In Switzerland the radon concentrations are mainly in the Alps and in the Jura. But even in the middle of the country, it has a few highly loaded buildings. Radon can occur everywhere.

Whether the radongas can penetrate the house depends primarily on how close the house is in contact with the ground.

Examples of leaks in building envelope:

  • Cracks and joints in walls and floors
  • Openings for cables and pipes
  • Basement floors made of soil or gravel

In Switzerland, radon is responsible for about 60% of the radiation exposure of the population. Radon is the most important cause of lung cancer after smoking. Approximately seven million people live in Switzerland. Approximately 70,000 deaths a year, of which 17,000 are due to the effects of cancer. Lung cancer requires about 2700 victims a year. Of this, 200 to 300 are attributable to the radon. Radon is thus the most dangerous carcinogen in the living area.

The radon concentration can be measured in a simple and cost-effective way using a dosimeter. The dosimeters can be ordered from Hi-Tec-Support GmbH. These are delivered directly to your home. The dosimeters are placed between 1 and 3 months in different rooms. Recommended min. 2 dosimeters per house: one is placed in the deepest, inhabited space, the other in the potentially highly loaded space. After the measurement period, return the dosimeters to us. We evaluate the dosimeters and send you the results as well as an interpretation of the results.

Alternatively, you can rent a digital Radon Meter. The digital meter records the radon concentration per hour and displays the current values. A measuring period of min. A week is recommended, all different times of day and time are shown. If you opt for a longer measuring period, the statistical randomness of the results is also reduced.
